St. John's Wort standardized 300mg / 60 capsules St. John's Wort is also known as Goatweed, Hypercium, and Klamath weed. St. John's Wort has been used medicinally for centuries. Its flower contains two key ingredients, the dianthrone derivatives hpericin and pseudohypericin, and flavonoids and tannins (hperoside, quercetin, rutin, and catechin), xanthrones, monoterpense and sesquiterpenes, and phytosterols (beta-sitosterol). Xanthrones and hypericin are MAO inhibitors, which can retard the breakdown of serotonin and norepinephrine, leading to improvement in symptoms of depression. The flavonoids are useful for wound healing and reducing inflammation, externally and internally. Hypericin and pseudohypericin are both antivirals; hypericin works more strongly with exposure to light. Hypericin in high doses inhibits reproduction of enveloped retroviruses such as HIV; it is not effective for viruses without envelopes, such as polio and adenovirus. St. John's Wort may ease menstrual cramps. SUPPORTIVE AGENTS Beta-carotene and Vitamin C RESEARCH SUMMARY • Two key ingredients are the dianthrone derivatives hypericin and pseudohypericin.
