NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS FOR WEIGHT LOSS As usual you should consult a physician before trying any new supplements. If you experience any abnormal symptoms stop taking all new supplements immediately and contact your physician. Green Tea (camellia sinensis) : Most of the research done on green tea has been focused on the antioxidant properties but several years ago researchers found that green tea can help control appetite and speed up ones metabolism. Recommended Dosage : Take one or two 500mg capsules that provide 300mg to 400mg of polyphenols with meals daily: or eat 3g of green tea powder daily by mixing it into your food. Drinking 6-7 cups of green tea daily will also give you the same dosage. Cautions : Green tea can cause mild stomach upset in individuals. Remember that green tea contains caffeine: which can cause sleeplessness, anxiety, nervousness and headaches. Ephedra (ephedra sinica) : Chinese herbalists have used Ephedra, or ma huang, for more than 4,000 years to treat ailments such as asthma and joint pain. In a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, there was a definitive link in 43 different cases of hypertension, stroke, seizures and heart attacks to ephedra. None of the published clinical trials or reports found any negative side effects from taking 90mg or less. Recommended Dosage : Do not use ephedra without consulting a heath care practioner first. Take up to 90mg of the herb per day, divided into three doses. It is also suggested by physicians to not take ephedra for more than a six-month period. Cautions : Ephedra can cause heart palpitations, sleeplessness, anxiety, nervousness, headaches or vomiting. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart condition or a psychological disorder, do not take ephedra. Chromium : Chromium, an essential mineral, comes from brewer's yeast, whole grains and meat. Chromium helps insulin, a hormone that controls hunger and fat storage, work more efficiently. As a result the body will stores less calories as fat and instead uses them to build muscle. Recommended Dosage : Take 400mcg to 600mcg daily between meals for weight loss. For maximum results chromium should be taken for more than 12 weeks. Cautions : Taking more than 1200mcg of chromium daily for can possibly cause renal failure, liver dysfunction and other life-threatening side effects. Some studies also showed a slight weight gain in some patients. This was due to lean-muscle gains, as it is widely known muscle weighs more than fat. Pyruvate : Pyruvate is a carbohydrate-like nutrient induces fat loss. Food sources of pyruvate include bananas, red and golden delicious apples, red wine, and spinach. To achieve fat-loss benefits it is recommended using supplements. Recommended Dosage : Take 3g to 5g daily. Take in four to six week cycles (four or six weeks on, then one week off). Cautions : High doses (40g to 50g) of pyruvate can cause diarrhea and stomach irritation. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) : Found to be a cancer-fighting fatty acid in the late '80s, CLA which is found in meat and dairy foods was found to help reduce body fat in the late '90s. While CLA does not exactly burn fat, as some claim, it does help in preventing fat cells from growing larger. Recommended Dosage : Majority of expert's recommend 3.4g of CLA daily, taken with meals to help prevent gastrointestinal upset.
